Padma Jairam B.A.
Graduate Intern Counsellor
Padma’s life journey brought her from Singapore to Vancouver in June 2011. She has since embraced Vancouver as her home and become actively involved in volunteer work in the Downtown East Side. She is inspired by what she experiences at these non-profit organizations and is humbled by what she learns through her interactions with the diverse and marginalized populations she works with. She believes in the strength of the human spirit to persevere through hardships but also knows that no problem is insignificant and that nobody should feel ashamed or isolated because of their struggles. Padma sees every person as a gift and sees therapy as a shared experience that emphasizes the client’s strengths in working collaboratively through their concerns.
While primarily a Person-Centred Existentialist, Padma also utilizes Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy and Family Systems in her practice. However, she believes in tailoring the therapy to her client’s needs and is more than willing to adopt other forms of therapy as required in the best interests of the client.
Padma began as a lawyer in Singapore but quickly found that she wanted to teach. Her next ten years were spent teaching students aged 6-18 years from the entire spectrum of academic abilities, including 3 years in the Gifted Education Programme. She also had the opportunity to lead her team of colleagues as Head of the English Department in a high school for 2 years. She treasures the lessons her students taught her about education, life and more importantly herself as much as they gave her the chance to teach them. She has had extensive experience counselling youth and coaching them through leadership workshops as well as training her colleagues in counselling interventions. She also has experience working with anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, disordered eating, grief and loss, multicultural issues, trauma and sexual orientation.
Padma works with youth, adults, couples and families.
